Why chimneys here vary so much

Hazel Park stayed township land, with very loose building rules, until it became a city in 1941. Plenty of families built small and added on later, and some did the work themselves. So the chimney on a Hazel Park house might be original, or it might have gone up years later when the house grew. Two chimneys on the same block can be built in completely different ways. A $49 inspection looks at yours from the crown down to the firebox and tells you what's venting into it. If the house was enlarged, we also check where the addition's roof meets the chimney, since that joint was flashed long after the brick went up.

The oldest bungalows

The Michigan bungalows near 9 Mile and John R went up in the 1920s and 1930s, when people working at Ford's Highland Park plant and the shops around it were settling here. Their chimneys are now close to a hundred years old. The clay tiles inside can crack, and the mortar between them can wash out, and neither shows from the roof or the fireplace. A camera down the flue shows both. It's $75 on top of a Level 1.

Buying, selling, or changing things

A Level 1 is $49 and is credited toward any repair or service we do after it. It covers the fireplace, the damper, the flue as far as we can see it, and the outside of the chimney.

A Level 2 is $149. It adds the parts of the chimney in the attic, basement and crawl space, and a camera through the flue. It's the one for a home sale, after a chimney fire or a storm, or when you change what vents into the chimney, like a new furnace or water heater.
