Chimneys by decade

Troy's 1960s and 1970s colonials usually have a brick chimney with a clay tile flue. Houses from the late 1980s and 1990s more often have a factory-built fireplace in a framed chase, or a brick-faced chimney on the front of the house around a metal flue.

Which one you have decides what an inspection looks at and what, if anything, needs attention.

Brick on the front

A lot of Troy houses have brick across the front and siding on the other three sides. When the chimney follows that pattern, the part you see from the driveway can look fine while the side and back of the chimney, or the chase behind it, tell a different story. We look at all four sides.

Rusted chase covers

On the framed chases, the metal cover on top is often the first thing to go. We measure and replace rusted chase covers with ones made to fit.

Gas fireplaces

Many Troy houses built in the 1990s have a gas fireplace, and some have both gas and wood. A gas fireplace still vents through a flue, and that flue still needs to be looked at.
