Chimney sweep, inspection and repair in Utica
Utica is under two square miles, with its old downtown at Cass and Auburn and streets of 1950s and 1960s ranches and Cape Cods north of the Clinton River.
Downtown, after the fires
Fires in 1905 and 1906 burned most of what was then the village, so only a few buildings in Utica are older than that. The small historic district around Cass Avenue and Auburn Road has one of the exceptions, a Queen Anne house from the 1880s. Most of the houses on the blocks near downtown went up after the fires.
A chimney that has stood for a hundred years has usually had some work done on it. Some were rebuilt above the roof, some lost a flue, and some were never lined. An inspection tells you what's there now.
North of the river
Between the Clinton River and the Shelby Township line, most houses are ranches and small Cape Cods from the 1950s and 1960s, with some 1970s split-levels mixed in. On a Cape Cod the chimney often runs up the gable end, outside the house, where the brick takes the weather on three sides. On a ranch it usually comes through the roof near the middle.
Many of these lots have tall pines and oaks. Needles and leaves collect on the crown and against the flashing on the uphill side, where they hold water. An uncapped flue under those trees is an easy way in for squirrels and raccoons. A chimney cap with mesh sides keeps them out.
When the river comes up
The Clinton River has flooded low streets near it more often in recent years, including in April 2026. If water got into your basement, the furnace and water heater down there vent up through the chimney on a lot of these houses. Tell us about the flooding when you book, and we'll look at the base of the chimney and the cleanout along with the flue.
