Chimney sweep, inspection and repair in Romulus
Romulus covers about 36 square miles, and Detroit Metro Airport takes up a large part of it. Its houses run from older ones near downtown to modest postwar houses to subdivisions built in the 2000s.
A city around an airport
Romulus was a township from 1835 and became a city in 1970. The airport, I-94 and I-275 all cut through it, so the houses sit in separate pockets with industrial land and open ground between them. The age of the house changes a lot from one pocket to the next, and so does the chimney.
The village of Romulus was platted in 1871, and the Kingsley House in the Downtown Historical Park dates to 1855. Some of the oldest houses in the city are near downtown. On a chimney that age, the top few feet above the roof take the most weather, and that's where we find cracked crowns and mortar washing out.
The sound insulation program
From 1997 to 2006, the airport's sound insulation program worked on more than 2,400 houses in Romulus and a few neighboring communities. The work included new windows and doors, attic insulation and caulking, and often a new furnace.
Two parts of that work can change how a chimney works. A new furnace may vent differently than the old one, which can leave a chimney flue with a different job than it was built for, or none at all. A tighter house also lets less outside air in, and a fireplace needs air to draw. If your fireplace has smoked into the room since the work was done, that may be why. An inspection looks at every flue and what's venting into it.
The 2000s subdivisions
Romulus issued 245 permits for new houses in 2004 alone, and more than 150 a year in 2005 and 2006. Houses from those years often have a gas fireplace that vents out the wall, or a factory-built fireplace in a framed chase with a metal cover on top. Those are close to twenty years old now. If the glass is cloudy or the pilot won't stay lit, gas fireplace service covers the burner, the logs, the glass and the vent.
An open flue

Crowns and caps
The crown in the photo is weathered and stained, and it has no cap to protect the flue tile. We tell you whether a coating will hold or the crown needs rebuilding, and fit a cap at the same visit. You see the photos before we quote either one.
