Chimney sweep and cleaning in Lyon Township

Lyon Township still has a lot of open land and woods between the subdivisions, from the wetlands at Lyon Oaks County Park to the shores of Kent Lake. That's good for the view and hard on an uncapped flue.

Woods, wetlands and what comes down the flue

Lyon Oaks County Park covers more than 1,000 acres, most of it wetland, and Kensington Metropark reaches into the township's northwest corner. Plenty of houses here are close to tall trees. In the fall, leaves and seeds pack into cap screens and land on the smoke shelf of any flue without a cap. In spring, birds, squirrels and raccoons look for a dry spot to nest, and an open flue is an easy one.

Chimney swifts nest in masonry chimneys from May to August and are federally protected. If they're in yours, the nest stays until they leave. Our chimney swifts guide explains the timing.

Wood, gas and inserts

Many of the newer houses have more than one fireplace, and they don't all burn the same thing. One might be a wood-burning factory-built unit, the other gas. Some owners in older houses have put in a wood insert or a stove for heat. Anything that burns wood leaves soot and creosote on the flue walls, and wood that hasn't dried at least six months leaves more. We sweep each wood-burning flue, and a gas unit in the same house can be inspected on the same visit.

If you have a stove or an insert, call before you book so we can tell you what to expect.

What you get for $349

We put drop cloths down, sweep the flue with brushes on rods and inspect the chimney inside and out on the same visit. The price is for one flue, so set the quantity when you book if you have more. A camera through the flue adds $75. Before we leave, we tell you what we found in plain language, and if something on the outside needs work, you'll get photos and a quote for the chimney repair.

Book before it's cold

The first cold weekend of the fall is when everyone wants a fire at once. Booking ahead of it means you aren't waiting for an opening. Our guide on how often to clean a chimney helps you decide whether yours is due.

Questions

We have a wood insert in Lyon Township and burn most of the winter. How often should it be swept?

An insert that runs most of the winter usually needs a sweep every year, before the season starts. The sweep covers the liner from the insert to the top of the chimney. If you burn less, the inspection on the same visit tells you whether you can stretch it.

Do you sweep gas fireplaces?

Gas doesn't leave creosote, so a gas fireplace usually doesn't need sweeping. It does need the venting and the cap checked, since nests and debris can block it just like a wood flue. Book an inspection for a gas unit, and a sweep for anything that burns wood.
